Modernization of street lighting - think about tomorrow today!

As part of the commitment of the city of Mena, Chernihiv region, to the Sustainable Development Goals, the municipality developed a Sustainable Energy Action Plan and implemented the project Modernization of Street Lighting in the City of Mena. The project was implemented with the support of the EU program "Covenant of Mayors - Demonstration Projects".

The "Covenant of Mayors - Demonstration Projects" (CoM-DeP) program is a European Union program that provides technical and financial support to cities that have joined the Covenant of Mayors and have committed to implementing energy-efficient measures to reduce their environmental impact. The overall goal of the Project is to reduce CO2 emissions by 20%.

Before upgrading its street lighting system, the city set four main objectives: to improve road safety by bringing the lighting level up to the established standards while saving energy as much as possible and simplifying the daily management of lighting operations.

The municipality needed a system that could measure, control and monitor connected lighting devices and display information on a virtual map in real time. In addition, the system had to work remotely, using a standard web browser over existing networks.

As part of this ambitious project, 1,400 inefficient and environmentally hazardous luminaires were replaced with energy-efficient LED ones, the outdated power supply system was replaced with modern self-supporting insulated wires and a modern GSM street lighting management system was installed. This system has the ability to remotely control, monitor and read electricity meters.
